Sawat-dee ka (Thai Greeting) and Welcome to ReachThailand.com!
Sawat-dee Ka!
Continually we have been reminded of your faithful prayers and support for us over the last month, and we are incredibly grateful. Thank you so much for your encouraging emails and letters – we apologize to those whom we have not replied to yet. This past month has been our busiest since arriving in Thailand, but has also held some of the most rewarding times in seeing God move in students’ hearts.
The focus of our efforts in October was directed toward the Leadership Training Institute (LTI) Camp. LTI was a five day camp for university students who are involved in Campus Crusade across the Northern Thailand region. Our STINT team was tasked with composing the recreation portion of the camp, which involved planning for over seven hours of games ranging from three-legged soccer to hot-potato-fish (played like hot potato, but instead of using a potato using a raw fish)! In the days leading up to the camp, we were able to join the staff in a week of focused prayer for the camp and preparation for all the activities. We are always greatly encouraged as we get to work alongside the Thai CCC staff and witness their incredible love for the Lord and the university students.
LTI was held at Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand, a beautiful setting with glorious cool weather! About 200 students from multiple college campuses attended this year. The theme of the camp was ‘Approved’ based on 2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” Depending on the individual student’s place spiritually, separate seminars were available throughout the week to assist in their understanding of the Bible and personal growth. Our hope and vision is that this camp would be a catalyst for students to grow in their love for Christ and as a result desire to be a part of fulfilling the Great Commission.
To gain experience in sharing their faith, all students were divided into groups alongside staff and sent out for two days to share the Gospel with the people in remote mountain villages. Our team was sent to the village of Pamhon. We traveled about an hour up, down and around on dirt roads that led through some beautiful views of the mountainous Thai landscape. On arrival, we were paired with a local church that would provide our housing, meals and insight into the village in which we would be sharing the Gospel.
While in the village, we joined with Jib, a student from Payap University, to share with local villagers. Jib shared with us that it was her first time to initiate a spiritual conversation with anyone since becoming a Christian last year. She explained that before coming to LTI she lacked confidence and fear had stopped her from sharing her faith. Now, she felt both equipped and confident to take the Gospel to others. It was amazing to see God work through Jib as she shared with the villagers. Throughout the afternoon, she shared her faith with two families and several other individuals; all were open and excited to hear. It was evident that God used the conversations in unique ways despite some of the strongholds held by the villagers, and used this experience to give Jib confidence when returning to her campus.
In our village, we learned that many people were opposed to following Christ because of strict traditions upheld in many families. The head of the household would determine what the family believed, and choosing to differ from that norm within the family was not accepted. Because of this, several people indicated that they wanted to place their faith in Jesus, but said they were unable to because of their family’s beliefs.
LTI camp was eye-opening for students and for us alike. It is so good to see God using the ministry of CCC in Thailand to continually draw people closer to himself. Thank you so much for your prayers for this week - it truly was life changing for many. This upcoming month, we will be helping the Thai staff prepare for a nation-wide conference called “CM 2007” (Chiang Mai 2007) and are praying to see 700 Christian students from across Thailand in attendance. Please join with us in prayer for this exciting event.
Later this week we will have new pictures, a new testimony from a Thai CCC staff member and our latest updates and prayer requests. You all are such a blessing to us; we are praying for you and again are so grateful for your continued support.
Much love,
Jonathan and Candice
1 Thessalonians 2:8
- CM 2007 is coming up next month. Please pray for the preparations for this conference - that it would be used to build up students in their faith.
- That we would be able to share the Gospel broadly at Rajabaht, and see students come into fellowship with Christ.
- That we would continually walk closely with the Lord and grow in faith and wisdom.
- The Laos Visa Extension Trip was incredible!
- LTI was a success. Eight students placed their faith in Christ at the camp, and many villagers had opportunities to respond to the Gospel!
