October 2007 Update

Sawat-dee Ka!
October is here, which means it is "finals week" at our campus, and with that our first school semester in Thailand has come to a close. The last month and a half has brought a lot of adjustments and has opened our eyes as we have seen God continue to provide and work within our lives and in the lives of the students.

Over the last month we have gotten much more acclimated to the culture and have actually begun to find our way around the city of Chiang Mai. From learning to drive on the opposite side of the road, eating fried chicken and rice with a stick and trying to figure out how to pay an electric bill that is completely in Thai, things that seemed so crazy in the beginning have become seemingly normal. Thailand is finally beginning to feel like home.

It has been great to get to know the "key students" who are involved with CCC at Rajabaht. Last week our team was able to organize a "Sing and Share" event on campus. Our goal for this event was to connect the Christian students in our movement through prayer, fellowship and personal testimonies. We were excited that 13 students attended, despite the busy time of the semester. Next semester we are praying towards increasing the momentum on campus through these events.

We have both really been enjoying times sharing our faith with students at Rajabaht. I (Jonathan) met a freshman English student named Pay. Soon after meeting him he informed me that he was a Christian, which was surprising in a country that is less than 1% Christian. I had the opportunity a few days later to share the Gospel with another student, and Pay was sitting in with us on the conversation. I explained that God loves us and has a wonderful plan for us all, but that people are sinful and are therefore separated from God. I explained that Jesus was sent by God to bridge the separation, creating a way for us to regain fellowship with God; however, that it is not enough to just understand these truths. I explained that each person must individually receive Christ as his/her Savior by placing his/her faith in Him. It is at this point in sharing that we always ask the students where they are in relation to God. Are they trying to get to God on their own strength and abilities, or are they relying on Christ to enable them to have fellowship with God? I noticed that Pay was thinking deeply about the question that had been raised. He told me that he wanted to be in fellowship with God but had never understood how. To better explain, we talked through Ephesians 2:8-9: "It is by grace that you have been saved by faith, not of yourselves it is the gift of God, not by works so that no one can boast." Pay immediately responded by saying, "I want to put my faith in Christ so I can have fellowship with God." He prayed right there, in the Rajabaht cafeteria and expressed his heart to God. With the end of the semester, we have only been able to get together with him a couple of times since (to play basketball and to take him for his 1st hamburger), but he is eager to continue learning and has expressed a desire to join our Bible study next semester.

This coming weekend our team is headed to Laos to renew our visas. As soon as we return, we will be preparing for LTI (Leadership Training Institute) camp that will be Oct. 15-19. The goal of this camp is to encourage students to grow in their faith and learn how to be disciples of Christ. Please be in prayer with us, that God will use the weeks to come to continually draw people to Himself.

We are so thankful for your continued prayers, support and encouragement. Please let us know how you are doing and how we can be praying for you and your family.

Much love,
Jonathan & Candice

Prayer Requests:
  • That LTI (Leadership Training Institute) planning would continue to go well. Our STINT Team is in charge of recreation for the week.
  • That God would use LTI camp in a significant way in the lives of the students.
  • That we would have safe travel to/from Laos this upcoming weekend, and that everything would go smoothly as we get our visas extended.
  • That God would lead us as we are planning for next semester at Rajabaht.
  • That we would continually walk closely with the Lord and grow in faith and wisdom.
Praises:
  • We have seen numerous students place their faith in Christ over the last month!
  • Sing and Share at Rajabaht was a great success, and has enabled greater momentum for our ministry going into next semester.
  • We have met many students on campus connected to the "English Club." This so encouraging because not only do they speak great English, but they also are excited to hang out with our team and talk about what we are doing in Thailand.
